When choosing a waste or cardboard baler, start with your process rather than a catalogue model: what waste is generated, how much there is and how it is currently collected and removed.

1. Underestimating actual waste volumes

Saying 'we have a lot of cardboard' is not enough. It is better to know the number of containers, bags or collections per week or month. Approximate waste weight is also useful where possible.

An undersized baler requires extra work. An oversized one may cost too much and take up unnecessary space. Throughput must match the actual waste stream.

2. Focusing only on compaction force

Greater compaction force is not automatically better. A smaller shop or warehouse may benefit more from compact dimensions, a convenient loading opening and straightforward electrical connection.

5. Forgetting how the bale will be moved

Bale weight should not be judged by 'bigger is better'. Consider how the bale is removed from the baler, where it is stored and how it is transported.

At one site, a smaller bale is conveniently moved by trolley, while another uses a forklift. Also check the bale format your waste contractor prefers.

6. Overlooking space and power supply

Before ordering, establish where the machine will stand. Allow space not only for the baler itself, but also for opening doors, removing bales and safe staff access.

Check the power supply too. Some compact models use 230 V, while larger equipment may need a different supply. Clarify these requirements before finalising the model.

7. Choosing a baler on price alone

A cheaper model may look attractive, but if staff constantly fold large boxes, empty the chamber or manually handle awkward bales, the initial price difference may not reflect the real convenience of operation.

When comparing quotations, consider the whole process: loading opening, bale size, power requirements, footprint, tying and support options.
